His Life and Legacy

Srila Prabhupada was born in 1896 in Kolkata, India. From an early age, he showed a deep interest in spirituality and devotion to Lord Krishna. In 1922, he met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, who inspired him to spread Krishna consciousness in the English-speaking world.

Following this instruction, Srila Prabhupada worked tirelessly for decades preparing himself for this great mission. He translated and wrote commentaries on many sacred texts, most notably the Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, Chaitanya Caritamrita, and other bhakti shastras, presenting them in a way that could be clearly understood by modern readers.

In 1965, at the age of 69, he traveled alone to the United States with very few possessions and no financial support. Despite many hardships, he incorporated ISKCON in New York City in 1966. His powerful teachings, personal character, humility, and compassion attracted thousands of followers who assisted him to spread this Bhakti movement worldwide.

In just twelve years, Srila Prabhupada opened more than 100 temples, translated over 60 books, and inspired a global spiritual revolution. His life’s work continues to guide millions of people toward a life of devotion, peace, and purpose. His mission, even in his physical absence, continues grow. By 2025, 800 million books have been sold, 850 ISKCON Temples have been opened and sanctified food, prasadam, is distributed to more than a million recipients every day! Truly, the Sun never sets on the fully spiritual activities of ISKCON.
